Minister for Agriculture, Tomasi Tunabuna has strictly condemned the senseless killing of pets in recent weeks where a pet dog was hacked to death earlier this month and another was brutally beaten up by drunk men over the weekend.
Following concerns that a fine not exceeding $100 or imprisonment for up to six months is not a strong penalty or deterrent, Tunabuna says the Protection of Animals Act 1954 is under review, and increasing the penalty is part of it.
While speaking to fijivillage News, Tunabuna says he knows what the owners must be going through, as losing a loved pet could be similar to losing a child.
He says as part of the review, they are also looking at the responsibility of pet owners, who should also be held accountable if their pets are not well taken care of.
Tunabuna stresses that it is everyone’s responsibility to take care of animals.
He says pets should be vaccinated, have a proper place to play, and be well looked after, but it is sad to see that people keep the ones they want and abandon others on the streets.
The Minister further says there is a problem with overpopulation and there should be a limit on the number of pets that can be kept, for which the Ministry and municipalities will be responsible.
Tunabuna says the Ministry alone cannot do this and needs the support of everyone, including the media, to help create awareness on animal welfare and treating pets with love.
Meanwhile, police are still investigating both the incidents.
