Truth and Reconciliation Commission Chairman Dr Marcus Brand resigns

The Chairman of the Fiji Truth and Reconciliation Commission, Doctor Marcus Brand has resigned.

Doctor Brand was not present in the hearing yesterday when Prime Minister, Sitiveni Rabuka appeared before the commission.

fijivillage News understands that Doctor Brand has resigned for personal reasons.

The Commissioners are expected to have hearings and gather statements until October next year, and they are expected to submit their report by January 2027.

The Commissioners of the Fiji Truth and Reconciliation Commission were sworn in by President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu in January this year.

Sekove Naqiolevu, Rachna Nath, Asilika Laqeretabua and Rajendra Hiralal Dass remain as Commissioners.

Dr Brand is originally from Austria and has served in international positions for more than 25 years working with the United Nations, the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe, the European Union and others, and has lived and worked in Europe, South and Southeast Asia and the United States.

We have sent questions to the Commission and the government regarding the resignation.
