Troy Parrott completed a sensational hat-trick with virtually the last kick of the match as the Republic of Ireland came from behind to defeat Hungary 3-2 and book their place in the World Cup play-offs in the most dramatic of circumstances.
After keeping their qualification hopes alive with a stunning 2-0 victory over Portugal on Thursday, Heimir Hallgrimsson’s side travelled to Budapest knowing only a win would be enough to secure a play-off spot.
Hungary made the perfect start when Daniel Lukacs headed home in the fourth minute, and although Parrott levelled from the penalty spot, a thunderous strike from Barnabas Varga restored the hosts’ lead before half time.
Ireland pushed desperately after the break, and Parrott’s clever finish 10 minutes from time reignited belief within the travelling supporters.
The drama intensified when substitute Johnny Kenny was denied by goalkeeper Denes Dibusz, but Ireland refused to give in.
The defeat leaves Hungary, captained by Liverpool star Dominik Szoboszlai, devastated as their wait for a World Cup finals appearance stretching back to 1986 continues.
In the group’s other match, Portugal thrashed Armenia 9–1 to cement top spot and secure automatic qualification for next year’s World Cup in North America.
