Town and Country Planning & Subdivision Act in review

Town and Country Planning & Subdivision Act in review

Minister for Local Government Premila Kumar.

The Ministry of Local Government is holding consultations in the Central Division today to amend the Town and Country Planning and Subdivision Act.

Local Government Minister, Premila Kumar says the outcome of this review is to minimise uncontrolled and poorly regulated development.

She says the relevancy of requirements for plot ratio, setbacks and minimum lot sizes will be reviewed to introduce more flexibility in the consideration of building and subdivision applications.

Kumar says the previous legislations are more than 70 years old and not in par with international planning standards.

The Ministry along with the services of Nadkam Consultants, is reviewing both the legislations to make it more relevant to the people’s needs.

The Director for Town and Country Planning, Mohammed Zair says they started consultations in last month covering the Western and Northern Divisions.

Some of the agencies present today at the consultations were various Municipal Councils, Fiji Police Force, Fiji Ports, Ministry of Lands, Fiji Roads Authority and the Fiji Institute of Surveyors.
