Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka says one of his first actions in office was to make it possible for Dr Padma Lal to bring home from Australia the ashes of her distinguished late husband, Professor Brij Lal, Fiji’s most famous historian.

In a tweet, Rabuka says the burden of oppression is lifted from Professor Lal’s family.

Doctor Padma Lal arrived into the country with late Professor Brij Lal's ashes yesterday.

She and her late husband were deported from Fiji in 2009.

They were received by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad.

Professor Lal’s ashes is expected to arrive at his home in Tabia, Labasa on Saturday.

Dr. Lal had earlier said the interment or scattering of Professor Lal’s ashes in Tabia River will be preceded by a formal event at Tabia Sanatan College from 12.30pm to 2pm to remember the pre-eminent historian on Girmit and a true son of Fiji.
