American tennis player, Taylor Townsend is being applauded for her composed response to Jelena Ostapenko’s heated remarks during their US Open match.

Footage has emerged showing Townsend's gracious response after Ostapenko told her opponent she has “no education and no class”.

Townsend calmly replied: “Whatever you want to say, but you can learn how to take a loss better.”

A reporter asked Townsend whether she thought there were racial undertones to those comments.

She said she didn’t take it in that way, but that has been a stigma in their community of being ‘not educated’ and all of the things, when it’s the furthest thing from the truth.

Ostapenko later posted on social media about how many messages she received that she is a racist.

She wrote that she was never racist in her life and she respects all nations of people in the world.
