The new taxi flag fall charge is now $2 from 6am to 9pm and $3 from 9pm to 6am in Viti Levu while for areas outside Viti Levu, the new charge is $2.30 from 6am to 9pm and $3.30 from 9pm to 6am.

The waiting charge has also been increased from 10 cents per minute to 18 cents.

These changes are effective immediately however taxi drivers will need to calibrate their meters before implementing the new charges.

Drivers have been given time till the 31st of this month to calibrate their meters.

There will be no changes to the drop distance charges for taxi fare for now.

The current drop distance charge is 10 cents per 100 metres.

FCCC CEO Joel Abraham says they are still reviewing the drop distance charges.

He says they have determined that the submissions made by the Fiji Taxi Association and the Fiji Cabbies Association were not feasible.

Abraham says there is no single solution that exists for drivers who are in different geographical locations and they are exploring the option of determining fares by district.

An immediate freeze has also been announced on the driver and owner income model.

This means that no owner leasing out the taxi permit or taxi for driving purposes in a lease term or on a commission basis can increase their income.
