A Nadawa taxi driver is calling for justice following allegations that he was punched and assaulted by two police officers without any reason on the 18th of this month.

Nirmal Chand says while taking two people to Nepani in the early hours of that morning, one of the passengers put a knife on his neck after which he started yelling.

Chand says a police vehicle was behind them and two police officers came to his vehicle.

The 59-year-old says he does not recall where the other two men went when the officers came.

However Chand claims the officers then accused him of drunk driving and alleges he was punched a few times by both officers.

He adds despite giving a negative on the breathalyzer test, the officers kept him in custody for almost 2 days and charged him with drunk driving.

That case will be called in the Nasinu Magistrates Court on 9th August.

Chand has also claimed that he had a severe asthma attack while he was locked up and yelled out for immediate medical assistance however one of the officers said to let him die.

He adds he was unconscious for about 30 minutes after the asthma attack.

Chand adds he filed a complaint at the Police Headquarters after getting bail and the Internal Affairs Department is looking into the matter.

Police have confirmed that their investigations are ongoing.
