A number of HIV cases identified in Lau province

Task Force formed to address HIV, drug issues and youth empowerment

A Task Force has been set up during the Lau Provincial Council Meeting to address HIV, drugs issues and youth empowerment, and to strengthen prevention and control measures across the islands.

Roko Tui Lau, Jioji Kalounivalu confirms that a number of HIV cases have been identified in the province, prompting immediate action to establish the task force.

Kalounivalu says the Lau Provincial Office, in collaboration with health officials, community leaders, and the church, will work together to educate people about the importance of early testing, safe practices, and reducing stigma around HIV.

The Tui Nayau and Sau ni Vanua o Lau consultant, Nacanieli Yalimaiwai highlighted that the initiative aims to create awareness, improve access to health services, and prevent the further spread of HIV within the province.

Yalimaiwai says the four critical focus areas are HIV and drug abuse, poverty and unemployment, youth empowerment, and iTaukei rights.

He says the Vanua of Lau is taking action now because the growing crises of HIV and drug abuse are no longer confined to urban areas.

Yalimaiwai says the taskforce is expected to roll out awareness programs in villages and schools to ensure communities are better informed and protected.
