Suva Retailers Association President Jitesh Patel says the retailers are taking independent steps to improve public safety in Suva.

Patel confirms the retailers have heavily invested in surveillance cameras covering key areas of the city including Cumming Street, Mark Street, Waimanu Road, Brewster Street, and Greig Street.

He says all these cameras are linked directly to Totogo Police Station to assist in real-time monitoring and response.

Patel says they they are working with the Police to have more patrols and set up a small police booth in the city as well.

He adds that while the government’s initiative to improve safety is commendable, retailers are also particularly concerned about the rise in drug use and glue sniffing in Suva.

The Association President says last month, they had a meeting with the Police Commissioner and the head of Central Division Police on how they can work together to combat these issues.

He stresses that addressing these concerns is a work in progress, but confirms that the association is working hand-in-hand with the Fiji Police Force.

Patel says they will be seeing more patrols, and are trying to set up Viber groups to easily pass on information to the police.

Patel adds it is important for people to feel confident and safe when visiting Suva, and the joint efforts between retailers and law enforcement are a step in the right direction.
