Consumer Council of Fiji Chief Executive Officer Seema Shandil.

A prominent supermarket in Lautoka has been caught placing limitation on the purchase of fizzy drinks which was on Christmas specials.

Consumer Council of Fiji Chief Executive Officer, Seema Shandil says this was discovered when a consumer wishing to purchase two packs of fizzy drinks (16 bottles) was informed that only a maximum of 6 was allowed per customer.

The matter was reported to the Council.

Shandil says retailers should refrain from limiting the number or quantity of goods consumers can purchase as it is a breach of consumer protection laws and consumer rights.

She says the only acceptable situation where retailers can place restrictions is under extraordinary circumstances and with the approval of Fiji’s competition regulator.

Consumers who come across similar retailers, which place limits on the quantity of goods that can be purchased are urged to lodge complaints with the Council.
