Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad confirms that an election will be held to appoint people to the Sugar Cane Growers Council but he says the government is yet to determine when this will happen.

While speaking to cane farmers at a budget consultation in Lomawai Sigatoka, Professor Prasad confirms funds will be allocated in the next budget for the election.

He says the new government is now trying to focus on bringing back the sugar industry and make appropriate changes because sugar is still very important for looking after the rural community and is also contributing significantly to the overall economy.

He says the coalition government wants to give the power back to the people and after consultations with the farmers, resolve the issues concerning the sugar industry.

The Deputy Prime Minister says if all the powers are with the government then only the government will decide what will happen.

Professor Prasad has assured the farmers that with time, an election will be held and a town council election will also be held so that the people have to power to elect members of the councils.
