A big welcome celebration is being accorded to 2000 coup leader, George Speight by the villagers of Naivicula in Tailevu today.

Speight was first accorded a welcome ceremony by his family at their family home known as Wakaya House, where a number of family members turned up to welcome home their family member after 24 years.

Speight was released by former President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere in September this year after serving 24 years in prison for treason.

He had pleaded guilty to the charge, and was sentenced to death.

His sentence was later commuted to life imprisonment after a recommendation by the Mercy Commission as Fiji no longer has the death penalty.
