The Sikh community is celebrating Guru Nanak Prakash Purab today, marking the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of the Sikh religion.
Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born in 1469 in Talwandi, a small village which is today known as Nankana Sahib, and is located in the Punjab province of Pakistan.
Speaking to fijivillage News, Head Priest at the Samabula Gurudwara, Sandeep Singh says Guru Nanak Dev Ji is revered for preaching values such as universal brotherhood, equality, religious freedom, human rights, peace, and harmony.
He says that as part of the celebrations, the Sikh holy scripture, Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj, which is considered a living Guru, was recited in its entirety over the past week.
He says devotees from surrounding areas in Suva have gathered today at the Samabula Gurudwara, which is over 102 years old.
Singh says the event began with a community breakfast, followed by the singing of religious hymns and prayers in remembrance of Guru Nanak’s teachings.
He says that lunch will also be served to all attendees after the religious ceremonies.
The head priest says the celebrations also emphasise Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s messages of unity and harmony.
He says Guru Nanak Dev Ji also advocated for women’s rights and equality in all aspects of life, including within the family, workplace, and society, and the Sikh community continues to promote gender equality in line with his teachings.
