Minister for Education Premila Kumar has revealed that they have a shortage of Early Childhood Education and Special Education teachers.

While visiting schools in Ba yesterday, Kumar says these are two areas where there is a need for more trained teachers.

She says they have been having a series of meetings with teacher training institutions and all the teachers registered with the teacher registration body.

Kumar says the teachers themselves need training on a yearly basis and the Ministry’s job is to ensure that training is available.

She adds this could be during holidays or after classes.

The Minister also says she does realize that special schools need a different structure and different types of resources.

She says this is because it is a huge challenge to cater for the needs of special children.
