Fijian seasonal workers would receive a lot of ad-hoc request for financial assistance from friends and families which put a lot of pressure on them.

This was highlighted by Marica Tabualevu who is an independent researcher and did data collection for ANZ’s MoneyMinded Impact Report.

Tabualevu says through ANZ’s initiative the workers learnt how to deal with the pressure.

She adds mobile phones were used as a tool to ask for instant money transfer.

Tabualevu says many of the seasonal workers have said that they would start by sending what was asked for and then gradually reducing the amount.

She further says it was easier for them to refuse from afar than when confronted face to face.
