The return of star loose forward Ardie Savea for the first time in 2020 will provide a massive boost to the Hurricanes for their Super Rugby Aotearoa campaign.

Savea was in good-form in 2019 before a knee injury in the All Blacks Rugby World Cup semifinal loss to England saw him ruled out of action for 5-6 months.

Coach Jason Holland has hinted that Savea may be playing at number 8 as he thinks that the position suits him well, being a strong carrier he is.

Loose forward has long been an area of strength for the Hurricanes and Savea’s return will give the team one of the most potent combinations in the competition.

Savea has been named in the Hurricanes 39 member squad for the all New Zealand Super Rugby competition that will kick-off this week.

The Hurricanes will open their campaign against the Blues at 3.05pm Sunday while the competition kicks-off with the Highlanders taking on the Chiefs at 5.05pm Saturday.

Hurricanes squad:

Forwards: Asafo Aumua, Dane Coles, Ricky Riccitelli, Fraser Armstrong, Alex Fidow, Tyrel Lomax, Ben May, Xavier Numia, Pouri Rakete-Stones, James Blackwell, Devan Flanders, Kane Leaupepe (currently injured), Tevita Mafileo, Liam Mitchell, Scott Scrafton, Isaia Walker-Leaware, Gareth Evans, Vaea Fifita, Du’Plessis Kirifi, Reed Prinsep, Ardie Savea, Murphy Taramai

Backs: Jamie Booth, TJ Perenara, Jonathan Taumateine, Jackson Garden-Bachop, Fletcher Smith, Vince Aso, Jordie Barrett, Ngani Laumape, Jonah Lowe, Billy Proctor, Danny Toala, Peter Umaga-Jensen, Kobus van Wyk, Wes Goosen, Ben Lam, Salesi Rayasi, Chase Tiatia
