As we mark the International Day of Sign Language today, the Ministry for Women, Children and Social Protection reaffirms its commitment to protecting and promoting sign language.
The theme for this year is “No Human Rights Without Sign Language Rights”.
Minister Sashi Kiran says the Ministry recognises the contributions of the Fiji Association of the Deaf, Harland Ministries Trust-Gospel School for the Deaf and the Language Interpreters Association Fiji.
Kiran highlights the Disability Policy newly endorsed by the Cabinet, which sets out a framework for advancing inclusion.
She says while progress has been made in the education and health sectors, meaningful change must begin at the family, community, school and workplace levels.
The Minister urges policymakers, educators, and communities to champion policies that recognise, protect, and promote sign language, stressing the need for quality education and accessible services so that no one is left behind.
She further says that Fiji’s journey with sign language, began in churches, extending in schools, and has now reached the national stage with interpreters on television news broadcasts and in Parliament.
Kiran also acknowledges the cultural richness and achievements of the Deaf community, describing sign language as not only a vital means of communication but also a vibrant expression of identity, heritage and belonging.
The Government has also endorsed its vision of an inclusive society where Deaf people can communicate freely, access services, and fully participate in all aspects of life, ensuring that no one is left behind.
