The Shree Sanatan Dharm Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji, during the Vanua Day Talanoa session before the Girmit Day celebrations, discussed with the chiefs the need to have a designated place for Sanatan followers to carry out funeral rituals in rivers and the sea with dignity.

They say the idea was well received by the chiefs and further discussions will take place in identifying suitable sites which will be similar to the funeral rites facility in Suva.

Sanatan Dharm President Dhirendra Nand says Girmit's history is not only a history of Indo-Fijians but a history of Fiji and the history of our people.

He says our people have always lived together despite the challenges and the difficulties and we are here to promote the philosophy of working together.

The Sabha is also facilitating football matches and has an exhibition area displaying girmitiyas artifacts, ornaments and farming tools at the Girmit Multicultural Centre in Lautoka.

Sanatan Dharm will also be putting up a float procession tomorrow to remember the contributions of our descendants.

Tomorrow is Girmit Day public holiday.
