A growing number of elderly Fijians are being neglected and forced to live on the streets due to lack of family support, prompting urgent discussions on housing solutions.

This has been highlighted by Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran, during her visit to Habitat for Humanity Fiji and the Housing Assistance Relief Trust where she explored partnerships to address elderly care and housing challenges.

Kiran says there is a need for safe and affordable housing for the aging population.

She says it is important to provide dignity and security.

Her visit also focused on youth and women's empowerment in HART communities through career development and income-generating projects to strengthen financial stability.

Kiran also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to working with key stakeholders to improve social protection and housing solutions for vulnerable groups.

We have sent further questions to the Minister on what specific actions the government is taking to address these issues and when a comprehensive plan is expected to unveil.
