The new facility being built for the South Pacific Community (SPC) in Suva is expected to significantly enhance how the organisation operates and deliver its services to its 22 member countries across the Pacific.
While officiating at the groundbreaking ceremony, Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Sitiveni Rabuka says Fiji has had a longstanding relationship with the SPC, both as a member country and as a host to one of its five regional offices.
He says as a demonstration of their commitment, Cabinet approved funding support of FJ$3.7 million in April towards the construction of the new SPC regional office building.
The Prime Minister emphasised that Pacific Island countries need to work together and continue to advocate for the issues that matter most to them, such as climate change, sea level rise, and the economic development of island nations.
He also extended Fiji’s appreciation to the SPC for the work undertaken to strengthen regional cooperation, foster sustainable development, and enhance the well-being of Pacific Island people through innovation and excellence.
The new facility is supported by the Governments of Fiji and Australia, in partnership with SPC.
