As Muslims start their month long fasting from today, Fiji Muslim League President Haji Basheer Ahmed is urging people to remember those less fortunate and strive to be more charitable and compassionate during this special time.

He says they must remember the true purpose of fasting which is to cleanse their hearts, minds and bodies, and to strengthen their connection with Allah.

He adds may this holy month of Ramadan bring peace, blessings and spiritual growth to all who observe it.

Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, is one of the most sacred times for Muslims.

It is the month in which it is believed that Islamic holy book, Quran was sent down from heaven as a guidance for men and women, a declaration of direction, and a means of salvation.

During this month, Muslims observe a strict fast from dawn until sunset and celebrate Eid .

Eid could be celebrated on April 10th.
