Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman believes the record cane payment of $91.38 per tonne will motivate farmers to work harder and increase cane production.

The cabinet has approved the provision of $8.2 million to top up the final cane payment for the 2022 season.

It will be topped by $5 per tonne which will increase the final payment to $6.15 per tonne.

In an interview with fijivillage News, Professor Prasad says the government is determined to rejuvenate the sugar industry and increase cane production.

He adds the government’s target is to get cane production back to about 3 million tonnes in the near future.

The Minister has reassured farmers that the final wash up payment will be hitting their bank accounts before the end of this month.
