Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says today the rate of recidivism is below 10% which is a huge achievement.

While commissioning the newly renovated mess hall for remand prisoners at the Lautoka Remand Centre, Sayed-Khaiyum says a few decades ago the rate was 50%.

He says projects such as yellow ribbon and the work with faith-based organisations and various community-based organizations must continue.

Sayed-Khaiyum further says for decades the Corrections Service was neglected adding that any tenant of the criminal judicial system should not be neglected.

Sayed-Khaiyum says when you do so, the criminal justice system is not delivering what it is supposed to.

He adds that the Bainimarama government made the policy decision to ensure to not only improve the conditions of those who work within the Corrections Service but also provide the right environment for people who serve time in the facilities.
