A 43-year-old farmer who sexually assaulted his daughter when she was 12 to 15 years old has been sentenced to 12 years imprisonment by High Court Judge Justice Chamath Morais.

The incidents occurred between 1st January 2016 to 17th February 2019 in their home in Ra.

The court was told that the girl’s mother had passed away in 2013 and she lived with her father and six other siblings.

While sentencing the man, Justice Morais told him that he was the biological father of the victim and she looked to him for her protection and security.

Judge Morais says the offences were a serious series of crimes and there was a breach of trust.

He says the victim was the offender’s daughter and was extremely vulnerable due to her age.

The man was in custody for 1 year and 7 months and has been ordered to serve the remaining 10 years and 5 months.

A non-parole period of 9 years has been set.
