Rabuka calls for review of police procedures after journalist assault yesterday

Following the violent assault on Fijian journalist Apenisa Waqairadovu outside the courthouse yesterday, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka says there needs to be a change in the police’s standard operating procedures regarding how they protect accused persons and convicted individuals in court.

Rabuka says police officers are currently following instructions to look after the accused as they enter court, and the convicted when they leave.

He says they would not have anticipated the assault unless similar incidents had happened before.
