The RFMF and the Fiji Police Force Joint contingent who are currently in the Solomon Islands providing security for the country's general election are gracefully lifting Fiji's name in terms of peacekeeping duties.

The joint force led by Contingent Commander Lieutenant-Colonel (Lt-Col) Sakiasi Baka is not only providing security but also doing humanitarian work.

Giving an update from the Solomon Islands, Lt-Col Baka says the RFMF engineers are currently constructing a new pharmacy at the Burns Creek Health Centre which serves the Province of Malaita.

He says the local community leaders have seen in previous years that the number of people coming to the Health Centre has been increasing, so they requested assistance in terms of maintenance work and construction of extra rooms.

He adds in early January 2022, RFMF personnel came to assist the medical authorities by constructing some rooms and also conducting some maintenance work to assist the medical authorities in treating the locals who visit the clinic.

In terms of providing security, Lt-Col Baka says the 100 men who came from Fiji regarding the national general elections, and 20 police officers have been deployed with the Australian Federal Police to support the local police.

He says the 80 RFMF personnel are staying in camp, ready to be deployed to support the Police if tension or riots arise.
