Energy Fiji Limited says the unplanned power disruptions to Queen Elizabeth Drive, part of Laucala Bay, part of Muanikau Road and the Damodar City complex yesterday were caused by a working contractor of Fiji Roads Authority causing damages to the underground power cables at Queen Elizabeth Drive.

EFL Chief Executive Officer Hasmukh Patel says teams were dispatched immediately to attend to this fault and restored power supply to the majority of its affected customers.

Patel says EFL has had multiple discussions with the Fiji Roads Authority and their road upgrading contractors following numerous damages to EFL underground power cables caused by the FRA contractors earlier.

He says these contractors continue to damage their power cables, resulting in unplanned power outages to customers and is of great concern to EFL.

The CEO says apart from inconveniencing their customers, such damages demonstrate a reckless disregard for the safety of the workers involved and members of the general public.

The CEO says anyone causing damages to the electricity infrastructure will be dealt with according to the law.

We have sent questions to FRA and they are yet to respond.
