Naqia Village bridge in Wainibuka, Tailevu

Police Commissioner Sitiveni Qiliho says they want to ensure that they are able to ascertain the truth and circumstances surrounding serious claims made in a post on Facebook about a man being allegedly thrown from the Naqia Village bridge in Wainibuka, Tailevu on Saturday.

Qiliho is urging anyone who has information or may have witnessed something to call the Director CID SSP Serupepeli Neiko on 9905 707.

He confirms the Criminal Investigations Department has been directed to investigate the case of alleged assault involving Police officers. Qiliho says the investigation is running in parallel to the Internal Investigation and he has directed that they conduct the investigation thoroughly and promptly. A person claims through the Facebook post which has been widely shared that the man was allegedly thrown off the bridge by police officers in civilian clothing, assaulted and an attempt was also allegedly made to drown him in the river.

The Police Commissioner says if it turns out to be a false allegation then they will also investigate those spreading this information.

Qiliho has continuously reiterated that the Fiji Police Force has no place for officers who abuse their authority, and will not hesitate to remove anyone found to be doing so.
