Police assure the public that operations will be beefed up and to continue in Suva City

Police have assured members of the public that their operations in Suva City and other divisions will be beefed up and continue towards the end of every week and into the weekends.

Fijivillage raised this issue as Police Officers were seen carrying out operations in the hot spots in the capital city over the weekend.

This also resulted in the arrest of three people who were involved in robberies in Suva City.

Police Chief of Operations, ACP Maretino Qiolevu says majority of the cases of theft occurring in Suva City are carried out by opportunists and not by an organised group as claimed.

ACP Qiolevu confirms that the operation is focused on those found loitering in towns for no reason as the cases of theft are of items that are easily disposed off such as mobile phones.

He says similar action is being taken by the operations team throughout the four divisions.

Many people who witnessed the Police operations in Suva City on Saturday night welcomed the move, saying that this should continue and should not be a one off operation.

They said that they felt safe with Police presence around the nightspots near nightclubs, restaurants and parks in Suva City.

Serious concerns were raised last week regarding the attacks and robberies being carried out by some people at night in the heart of Suva City.

Fijivillage had received reports and also witnessed people being attacked and robbed along Victoria Parade, Thomson Street, Carnarvon Street and other surrounding areas.

The main people being targeted were those coming out of the nightclubs or restaurants.

People have raised concern that these attacks and robberies by groups of youths happen almost every night, and there are many cases between Wednesday to Saturday nights.

They are calling for more police patrols, foot and bike patrols and CCTV cameras to stop this dangerous trend.
