Sugarcane farmers in Sigatoka could soon see relief from transportation challenges, as the Government considers setting up a local sugarcane juice extraction facility in the area.
The initiative aims to address long-standing concerns over the distance to the Lautoka sugar mill, which has affected efficiency and profitability for many farmers.
Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar Industry, Charan Jeath Singh, revealed the plan during the handover of the Burnt Cane Rehabilitation Grant to farmers in Sigatoka.
He says the government is exploring the idea of extracting juice from cane locally in Sigatoka, which would then be transported to Lautoka for final sugar production.
He adds that this move would significantly reduce transport costs and time, making the process more efficient and beneficial for farmers.
Singh says the sugar industry is Fiji’s second-largest industry that brings in foreign revenue, and there is a responsibility to increase production and uplift the sector.
He also emphasised the importance of supplying more green cane to sugar mills, which would improve the quality of sugar and lead to better returns in overseas markets.
He says the Ministry has identified Sigatoka and Rakiraki as key areas for production growth under its broader plan to revive and strengthen the sugar industry.
Singh says such investments not only address logistical issues but also aim to boost farmer income and ensure the long-term sustainability of the industry.
