Minister for Economy, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum

Minister for Economy, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says the donor list of the FijiFirst is being put out on social media by some in the Opposition, and those people who have made donations to the party are being harassed.

Sayed-Khaiyum says there is nothing wrong with individuals giving $10,000 a year to the party they support and the law is clear that businesses cannot donate to parties.

He also says if they were looking after those people who have donated to the FijiFirst, then they would not have reduced duties over the past years that takes away the protection for companies like those involved in the manufacturing sector.

Sayed-Khaiyum says some in the Opposition including Professor Biman Prasad keep harping about it that they are doing all the budget changes because of the people who donated to the FijiFirst.

He says if they were to look at some of the tax and duty reductions over the past few years, for a number of those manufacturing companies, individuals who have interests in those companies have donated to FijiFirst in their own individual right.

Sayed-Khaiyum says they have made it clear that if you have run a company 30 to 40 years, you have to let go of the duty protections as it affects the consumers.
