A passenger onboard the cruise vessel Norwegian Sun is found with illicit substances, charged, produced in court, and penalised in accordance with the law.
The Fiji Revenue and Customs Service says acting on credible intelligence, Customs officers conducted a targeted search of a passenger’s cabin, resulting in the discovery of prohibited substances.
They say the individual was subsequently referred to the Fiji Police Force for further investigation.
Further questions have been sent to FRCS and Police regarding the type and quantity of the substance, the identity and nationality of the person charged, and the penalty imposed.
Meanwhile, FRCS says this outcome underscores the seriousness with which such offences are treated under Fiji’s legal framework.
FRCS CEO Udit Singh says this interception reflects the vigilance and professionalism of their border enforcement teams.
He says they remain unwavering in its duty to protect Fiji’s borders and uphold the integrity of customs operations.
Singh is urging all travellers to comply with Fiji’s laws and respect the regulations in place to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our communities.
He says FRCS continues to emphasise its role in safeguarding Fiji’s borders, ensuring the safety of all travellers, and protecting the wellbeing of the Fijian public.
He is reminding all visitors and members of the public that the possession and trafficking of illicit substances are criminal offences that attract severe penalties.
