When 67-year-old Nawaka, Nadi resident Satya Narayan was told to undergo a Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) surgery, he immediately went into depression knowing of the future struggles his wife and sons would have to go through in order to raise the necessary funds for the complex operation.
Even after coming from a very humble family who survive on a hand to mouth income, Satya’s sons did not lose hope and immediately went into action mode by launching a public appeal and a bhajan (devotional song) programme to raise the $30,000 needed for the open-heart bypass surgery at Pacific Specialist Healthcare (PSH Hospitals) in Nadi.
Seeking the necessary approvals from government agencies, Satya’s sons launched a Facebook appeal seeking public help as well.
“I’m reaching out with a heavy heart to ask for your support. My father has recently been diagnosed with serious heart complications, including triple vessel coronary artery disease - a condition that significantly affects blood flow to his heart and requires urgent medical intervention,” son Nitesh Narayan wrote on his Facebook page one month ago.
He further stated in the post that according to the specialist report, his father’s condition was critical.
“He has severe blockages in multiple arteries and has been advised to undergo Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) as soon as possible to reduce the risk of a major heart attack. Delaying this surgery could be life-threatening,” Nitesh said.
“As you can imagine, the costs associated with the surgery, medication, and ongoing care are overwhelming for our family at this time. We are doing everything we can, but we need your help. Any amount, no matter how small, will go a long way in helping us give our father a second chance at life,” he further added.
After one month of sleepless nights and struggles, the family was able to raise only a third of the total amount required.
Coming from a very religious family background and being a popular bhajan singer in Nadi, Nitesh said he could not believe his ears when he received a call from PSH Hospitals advising him that his father has been endorsed by Shree Sanatan Dharm Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji national president Dhirendra Nand who is a board member of PSH Hospitals to receive a substantial grant from the newly registered PSH Foundation, the charitable and philanthropic arm of state-of-the-art 13-bed-bed specialty private hospital situated a stone’s throw away from the Nadi International Airport.
“I am so grateful to PSH Hospitals and Sanatan Fiji for making this divine intervention in our lives by offering my father this very timely medical assistance as the first recipient of the special medical grant under the PSH Foundation initiative,” Nitesh said.
Echoing similar sentiments, his father and heart patient Satya Narayan said he was so worried to see his sons running around day and night to raise funds and to receive the timely assistance from PSH Foundation was a divine calling.
“I am so thankful and request the Fiji Government and the business community to support the PSH Foundation so that it can help more needy patients in future through the endorsement of their respective board members,” an elated Mr Narayan said.
“My very special thanks goes to PSH Hospitals’ founder and CEO Mr Parvish Kumar and I wish to convey my blessings for him to carry on the good work by serving people and providing world-class healthcare not only for Fijians but the entire Pacific community.”
PSH Foundation was officially launched by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Strategic Planning, National Development and Statistics Honourable Professor Biman Chand Prasad in Nadi on the evening of Thursday, May 22.
A large number of people from across Nadi witnessed the launching which has effectively paved the way for people who are in urgent need of complex procedures but are unable to afford the procedures to get free treatment through the PSH Foundation which has board members from across all faith based organisations, the Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) and Heads of Pacific Health (HoPH), an influential group of government and non-governmental health elites from across the Pacific region.
