Pacific Recycling Foundation has observed a significant shift in the approach of a few Permanent Secretaries towards tackling waste management and environmental challenges.

PRF commended the leadership and collaborative efforts of the Permanent Secretaries for the Ministry of Local Government, Seema Sharma, the Ministry of Education, Selina Kuruleca and the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, Dr Sivendra Michael, as they work hand in hand with PRF in spearheading impactful initiatives to address environmental and waste management challenges.

PRF Founder Amitesh Deo says they are particularly encouraged by these Permanent Secretaries’ proactive stance and concerted efforts in seeking solutions, evident through their collaboration with the organisation.

He says it is noteworthy that two women are leading large ministries, which marks a progressive and welcome move towards gender inclusivity in leadership roles.

He adds the ease of collaboration with the Permanent Secretaries is commendable.

Deo says being locals, they possess invaluable local knowledge and expertise, offering a nuanced understanding of the waste management and environmental issues and challenges faced by Fiji and the region and their familiarity with the local context enables smoother navigation towards sustainable solutions.

Deo also extends the PRF’s appreciation for the quick responses and collaborative spirit demonstrated by these three Permanent Secretaries, and their willingness to engage with partners, such as PRF, underscores their commitment to addressing the waste crisis confronting Fiji and the broader region.

The PRF Founder adds it is imperative to prioritise the appointment of locals for positions of Permanent Secretaries, considering their profound understanding of the local context and their ease of collaboration, which ultimately enhances efficiency in addressing pertinent challenges.

Deo says that PRF has been able to jointly speed up its work with key initiatives, and this has also been possible due to the great effectiveness of Sharma, Kuruleca, and Dr Michael in driving forward initiatives and fostering efficient collaboration among stakeholders.

He says PRF remains committed to partnering with government agencies and stakeholders to foster a cleaner, and sustainable Fiji and the region.
