Pacific workers could see their retirement savings invested in projects such as affordable housing, renewable energy and infrastructure as pension and provident funds look at investing together across the region.
The issue was discussed at the Pacific Islands Investment Forum Conference in Nadi, which has brought together leaders from 23 funds across 13 Pacific countries.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Industries, Commerce, Business Development and Public Enterprise Manoa Kamikamica says the investment decisions made by these funds today will affect the future financial security of workers and their families.
He says Pacific pension and provident funds can work together and invest in projects that provide good returns for their members while also helping develop Pacific countries.
Possible investments include affordable housing, renewable energy, infrastructure, climate-related projects, digital development and commercial projects.
Kamikamica says funds working together could create better investment opportunities while also helping improve infrastructure and services across the Pacific.
He says those responsible for investing in peoples retirement savings need to make careful and responsible decisions.
Kamikamica says pension and provident funds do more than look after peoples retirement savings, as their investments can also help develop countries and their economies.
He is encouraging the funds attending the conference to work together, identify suitable projects and find more opportunities to invest together.
Kamikamica says this could help provide good returns for workers while also supporting the long-term development of the Pacific.
