More than 900,000 people have been evacuated as Typhoon Fung-wong made landfall in the Philippines, bringing destructive winds, torrential rain, and life-threatening storm surges across the country’s main island of Luzon.
At least two people have died since the storm — known locally as Uwan — struck Aurora province at around 9:10 p.m. local time on Sunday (13:10 GMT) as a super typhoon with sustained winds of 185 km/h (115 mph) and gusts reaching 230 km/h (143 mph).
By early Monday morning, the storm had weakened slightly to a typhoon as it moved across western Luzon near La Union province, though authorities warned that the threat of flooding, landslides, and strong winds remained severe.
The Philippine meteorological service described Fung-wong as “very intense” and warned of “high-risk, life-threatening” storm surges in coastal communities.
