More than $82 million has been compensated to victims of motor vehicle and school accidents since the establishment of the Accident Compensation Commission Fiji (ACCF) in 2018.
ACCF Manager and Accountant, Anjeet Charan revealed this while presenting the ACCF’s report to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Economic Affairs.
He states that ACCF was established to compensate victims of motor vehicle accidents, and the expansion of the scheme’s coverage to include employment and school accidents since 2019 has brought great relief to victims and the families of victims.
Charan says ACCF receives annual government grants to meet its operational, legal, and contractual obligations.
He says that since its establishment to date, ACCF has managed to handle 3,876 applications for compensation – 401 for death compensation and 3,475 for injury compensation – all related to motor vehicle, employment, and school accidents.
The manager further says it has now become easier to apply for compensation, as victims or their relatives can apply directly to ACCF, without being at the mercy of their employers.
He says the Accident Compensation (Amendment) Bill 2025 will ensure that ACCF only considers compensation applications arising from motor vehicle accidents.
He added that ACCF will also focus on creating road safety awareness in collaboration with the Land Transport Authority (LTA) to help reduce road accidents.
Charan also explained that other amendments relate to removing employment and school accident functions from ACCF - these will now be incorporated into the WorkCare Bill, which will be administered by the Ministry of Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations.
