Over 300 Bykeitou residents back community recycling as I-Recycle program relaunches

Over 300 Bykeitou residents back community recycling as I-Recycle program relaunches

More than 300 residents of the Bykeitou Informal Settlement in Nadera have recommitted to better waste management practices with the relaunch of the Pacific Recycling Foundation’s (PRF) I-Recycle Program.

In a statement, PRF says the initiative, supported by Pacific Energy and the Nasinu Town Council, is designed to bring sustainable waste disposal to a community that has gone decades without formal waste collection services.

PRF says the program was originally launched in 2023 through a grant and had equipped the 60-year-old settlement with critical recycling infrastructure.

They say with the grant ending earlier this year, the program has now been revived with renewed backing from Pacific Energy and continued support from the Nasinu Town Council.

They add that residents had previously resorted to dumping or burning rubbish near a local creek—a practice that posed environmental and health hazards.

PRF says the program aims to transform those habits by encouraging proper waste segregation and recycling, especially in vulnerable communities most impacted by climate change.

PRF Founder and Waste Recyclers Fiji CEO Amitesh Deo says the relaunch reaffirms their commitment to making recycling accessible in underserved areas like Bykeitou.

Pacific Energy CEO Stephane Cadel says the program is more than just about recycling, it’s about transforming mindsets and encouraging long-term responsible waste practices.

The initiative is also part of Pacific Energy’s broader support for the ‘Look Beyond Movement,’ which promotes equity and resilience in marginalized communities.
