Over 100 patients will be receiving free of charge cataract surgeries today by the China (Guangdong) "Bright Journey" to Fiji mission at the Pacific Eye Institute.
This marks 10 years of the "Bright Journey" to Fiji and 50 years of China-Fiji relations.
Patient Varomue Marans, who underwent cataract surgery, says she is grateful for the initiative as she will now be able to see her 5-year-old granddaughter and spend more time with her.
She shares that her vision began to blur in July and gradually deteriorated to the point where she could no longer see, prompting her to seek help from eye specialists.
The Chair of the Hospital Council at Zhongshan Ophthalmic Centre, Sun Yat-sen University, highlights that they will be providing free surgeries to over 100 more patients.
Chief Expert of the Foreign Medical Mission, National Health Commission of China, Dr Chen Weirong, who performed the surgery on Marans, explains that each cataract procedure takes less than 5 to 7 minutes.
She further explains that they use medication that prevents bleeding in the eyes during surgery.
