Leader of the Opposition Inia Seruiratu has called for the immediate suspension of Permanent Secretary for iTaukei Affairs, Jone Navakamocea, pending a full investigation, after racially charged remarks made online.
He says that even if Navakamocea made the remarks in his personal time, they do not match the standards and values expected of a senior civil servant.
Seruiratu emphasised that “words shape nations, they outlive us, and they return with consequence.”
He warns that such comments weaken public trust in civil institutions and disrespect the experiences of Indo-Fijians, who are an important part of Fiji's diverse identity.
He says the remarks damage national unity – something Fiji has worked hard to build.
He adds that the iTaukei people are known for their warmth and generosity, and such values must never be overshadowed by the actions of a few.
The Opposition Leader says that ethno-nationalism grows when leaders stay silent, noting that two Deputy Prime Ministers have said nothing, and the Prime Minister has not spoken about the issue.
He also questioned the role of the Online Safety Commission, saying it should do more to stop the spread of online hate and be more active during times like this.
The Opposition Leader says this is not about politics but about principle, insisting that respect, unity, and constitutional responsibility must be upheld without compromise.
He reminded all elected officials that in moments like this, strong moral leadership is not optional – it is a duty.
