The Online Safety Commission has strengthened its partnership with global technology company Meta to boost online safety efforts across Fiji.
Meta is the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger.
Online Safety Commissioner Filipe Batiwale and his team met this week with Meta’s Head of Policy Programs for Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands, Cheryl Seeto, along with members of Meta’s policy team to explore ways to deepen collaboration.
During the discussions, Meta reaffirmed its commitment to helping Fiji tackle online harms and announced plans to provide targeted training for the Commission.
The training will cover outreach and online abuse—enhancing understanding of Meta’s community standards and content-moderation processes—as well as community awareness campaigns to promote digital safety in schools and local communities.
Batiwale stressed the importance of Meta having a stronger presence in Fiji to ensure that local perspectives are reflected in policies and responses to harmful content on its platforms.
The Online Safety Commissioner says partnerships with global technology companies are essential to ensuring Fijians are protected in the digital space, especially young people, are equipped with the knowledge and tools to stay safe online.
The meeting is seen as a significant step towards closer government–industry collaboration in creating a safer digital environment for all Fijians.
