Commissioner of Police, Rusiate Tudravu

Police officers who are charged with domestic violence or drug-related offences will be suspended from work.

This has been highlighted by the Commissioner of Police, Rusiate Tudravu during a press conference when he was asked by fijivillage News what actions are taken against officers charged with such offences.

Tudravu says the decision regarding salary payments during the suspension will depend on the gravity of the offence and he will make that decision on a case-by-case basis.

He says statements have been made about cover-ups, the erosion of public confidence in the conduct of investigations involving police officers, and other related issues.

Tudravu is urging the public to trust the process, as they will hold officers accountable and have nothing to hide.

He also highlighted that they have nothing to gain from condoning unprofessional and corrupt practices as it only impacts community – police relations, and they need the support of the community as they cannot fight crime alone.

He adds if you have information and evidence, lodge an official report, and they will investigate and ensure appropriate disciplinary action is taken.

Meanwhile one of the 4 charged in the 4kg methamphetamine case in Nadi last week is a member of the Counter Narcotics Bureau, and Police Commissioner Tudravu says he is very concerned and has directed that the constable be interdicted without salary.

Tudravu will meet the Minister soon with regards to the Bureau.

When questioned on the criteria for selecting officers for the Bureau, Tudravu says it was established before he assumed office and the only thing he can do now is go back to the Minister.

He says the police officers are not based in the Fiji Police Force but in the Ministry.
