Nothing matters more to me than the safety, security and prosperity of Fiji and our Pacific island brothers and sisters, it’s my job as a leader to treasure and reassure myself and to reassure you that I am paying close attention to the disabled Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Plant.

In a video message on the discharge of water accumulated at the disabled Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Plant, Prime Minister Sitivieni Rabuka has reassured Fijians that the international Standards are reviewed annually by the UN General Assembly, based on estimates by the UN Scientific Committee on Effects of Atomic Radiation.

Rabuka says the International Atomic Energy Agency report is a nuclear field which seeks to promote the safe, secure and peaceful use of nuclear technologies in our precious blue Pacific Ocean.

He says he is convinced the IAEA will continuously monitor this process in Japan, as it has been for the last 10 years, making sure the discharge of water will not harm us.

Rabuka says Japan has been a close friend of Fiji and also the Pacific nation itself.

He also says Japan has demonstrated commitment to satisfy the wishes of Pacific island states, as conveyed to Japan by the Pacific Island forum chair, Prime Minister Brown of the Cook Islands.

He further says the IAEA is the United Nations' independent expert body which is a nuclear regulator, and a trusted member of the United Nations that will ensure the safety of more than 450 nuclear plants around the world.

Rabuka says the IAEA keeps us safe as Fiji is a proud United Nations member state, the IAEA works for us, and he trusts the expert judgment as he will be monitoring the progress very carefully.
