No clear answer from Gavoka if he will step down as SODELPA Leader in 2024

No clear answer from Gavoka if he will step down as SODELPA Leader in 2024

SODELPA Leader and Deputy Prime Minister Viliame Gavoka

There is no clear indication from the SODELPA Leader and Deputy Prime Minister Viliame Gavoka if he will step down from the leadership role.

When questioned today after the SODELPA Management Board meeting at Southern Cross Hotel, Gavoka says this issue has made its way to the media, but it's a work-in-progress.

He says it is his third term in Parliament, and he will see how everything goes.

SODELPA General Secretary Viliame Takayawa had earlier told fijivillage News that Gavoka has indicated to the party that he will not contest the next general elections.

Takayawa says they respect Gavoka’s decision.

He says according to their constitution, a new party leader is elected if the party does not win the elections.

Takayawa says with the current requirements as it stands, the best candidate for SODELPA Leader is Aseri Radrodro as first of all the leader has to be a member of parliament, and secondly, seniority in parliament is also considered.

The party’s AGM is expected in March and the party leadership issue will be part of the agenda.

Radrodro is yet to respond to our questions.
