The days of using the village hall for classes is over for students of Nakaidrau Infant School in Naitasiri after the Japanese government constructed a new classroom block with new desks and chairs.

The Counsellor and Medical Attache of the Embassy of Japan in Fiji Dr Ikeda Yuichiro says under their Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects Programme they were able to provide funding worth FJ$214,000 to Nakaidrau Infant School.

He says the school had to use the village hall as classrooms for Year 1 to Year 4.

He further says students in Year 5 to Year 8 had to trek a hazardous path to the nearest boarding school by crossing a river eight times and this is a dangerous route to the school which can cause accidents and parents are concerned about their children’s safety.

Yuichiro adds the building can also be used as an evacuation centre for nearby communities and villages.
