The World Sevens Series is set to be held in the New York City area for the first time ever, with World Rugby confirming the venue for the USA leg of the competition.
The two-day event will be held at Sports Illustrated Stadium on March 14th and 15th, marking the maiden trip to the East Coast city for the sport.
The stadium is home to MLS side New York Red Bulls and NWSL's Gotham FC, located in New Jersey.
It will be the last event of the regular season ahead of the SVNS World Championships, which takes place in Hong Kong, Valladolid (Spain) and Bordeaux (France).
World Rugby Chair Alan Gilpin said in a statement that they are thrilled to bring the HSBC SVNS series to New York, one of the world’s most iconic cities, for the first time.
He says the city’s energy and the passion of U.S. rugby fans make this the perfect stage for their athletes to showcase the speed, skill, and energy of sevens rugby.
He adds that they look forward to creating an unforgettable experience for fans, players, and the broader rugby community as they continue to grow the sport in the United States.
New York was slated to host an alternate Sevens event in 2023, but wildfires led to the cancellation of the tournament, which was set to feature a $1 million prize pool.
Meanwhile, the Dubai 7s will be held from next Saturday to Monday, 1st December.
