New FRU Board Director Naulivou’s appointment terminated by FRU after her comments regarding lesbians in rugby

The Fiji Rakavi Football Union Limited Board of Directors has terminated the appointment of Laijipa Naulivou as Director of Rugby after she made comments that she does not condone lesbianism in our national women’s rugby team.

Naulivou was just announced as a new Director last Saturday after Conway Beg’s resignation.

While she had tendered her resignation, the Board determined that a firm stance is necessary to reinforce its commitment to upholding professional standards and safeguarding the integrity of Fiji Rugby.

The FRU says it categorically rejects any form of discrimination and the views expressed by Laijipa Naulivou are her personal opinions and do not reflect the official position of FRU.

They say they are committed to upholding the highest standards of governance, integrity, and accountability.

The FRU says in alignment with World Rugby’s core values of Discipline, Respect, Integrity, Passion, and Solidarity, they strongly promote inclusion and non-discrimination as fundamental principles of the sport.

The rugby body says our women’s team and all players can rest assured that this will in no way impact their opportunities, representation, and continued development as integral members of Fiji Rugby.

FRU says it remains steadfast in ensuring a supportive, inclusive, and empowering environment for all the Fiji Rugby Vuvale, regardless of gender, background, or identity.

As the governing body for rugby operations under the Fiji Rugby Football Union Trust, FRU says it adheres to World Rugby’s principles of strong governance, ethical leadership, and fair competition.

They say their primary responsibility remains on the development of rugby at all levels—from grassroots to the elite stage—while ensuring that all decisions reflect the best interests of the sport in Fiji.

FRU is now focused on ensuring a seamless transition in leadership.

The Board will engage with key rugby stakeholders, including players, unions, and international partners, to ensure that all governance and operational frameworks remain strong and effective.

A new appointment will be made in due course through a rigorous and transparent selection process.
