Leaving behind a secure career, working overseas and returning home to farm was a risk Fabiano Rogovakacali was willing to take to continue doing what he loves most—playing rugby.

The 35-year-old from Vuna Village in Taveuni, with maternal links to Bouma, resigned from the Fiji Corrections Service after nine years before spending nine months overseas, where he worked and played rugby.

He returned to Taveuni in 2023 to begin a new chapter as a full-time farmer while continuing his rugby journey.

Rogovakacali's rugby career began with Nadroga in 2011 before he went on to represent the Wardens team during his time with the Fiji Corrections Service.

He later played for Lautoka and Namosi, building years of experience at the provincial level.

Now back on his home island, Rogovakacali spends his mornings working on the farm before preparing for afternoon training sessions, balancing the demands of village life with his passion for rugby.

He says the change in lifestyle has not always been easy, but returning home has allowed him to stay close to his family while continuing to play the sport he loves.

Although he has featured in the Skipper Cup with other unions over the past six years, Rogovakacali says representing Taveuni means more than any previous campaign because he is now playing for his home island.

He says being part of the team is a source of pride, especially after witnessing the hard work and sacrifices made by the players and the wider community to reach this stage.

Rogovakacali thanked his wife, daughter and family for standing by him throughout every step of his journey.

He says he would never have come this far without their love, encouragement and sacrifices, adding that they continue to inspire him to give his best both on and off the field.

Taveuni came close to victory last week when they took on the defending Skipper Cup champions, Malolo, at Lawaqa Park, with Malolo winning 24-23.
