SODELPA MP, Niko Nawaikula and Minister for Industry, Trade and Tourism Faiyaz Koya.

“Let’s just not ratify the 2005 Agreement Establishing the Pacific Islands Forum to simply get some money.”

These were the words of SODELPA MP, Niko Nawaikula who also questioned why it has taken government 16 years to ratify this important agreement.

Nawaikula then told parliament that the late Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara was one of the father figures who had formulated the forum for regionalism, to protect members states and to ensure no one is left behind.

He then said the government has no money and is wanting donations from Australia and New Zealand.

Nawaikula also questioned government’s commitment to regional institutions like the University of the South Pacific.

Meanwhile, Minister for Industry, Trade and Tourism Faiyaz Koya says the Opposition’s insinuation that Fiji is not playing its part in the Pacific Islands Forum is very misguided.

He says Fiji is a founding member of the forum and nothing can change that.

Koya says our participation in the forum is not passive as we play a pivotal role in bringing the region together as a strong trade and economic block.

Koya says during the Trade Minister’s Forum held last month, Fiji set a regional target for vaccination against COVID-19 having an integrated regional response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Koya says Fiji’s leadership in the forum will ensure the regional institution looks at collective responses and solidarity that will enable economic recovery.
